Alastair Campbell suggests people write to MPs over Xmas party allegations

Tony Blair’s erstwhile director of communications Alastair Campbell has “strongly” suggested constituents write to their MPs over allegations that the prime minister breached Covid laws last year.

He compared the accusations to the scandal over Dominic Cummings’ lockdown trip to Barnard Castle last year.

“On Cummings the vast bulk [of Tory MPs] took the cut and paste line from No 10 and the whips,” he argued, going on: “Those with spine may be less willing to do so now. They are sick of having to lie for a liar.”

He also also advised Labour to “appoint an MP to make this a campaign”, in order to: “Create media and political pressure in every Tory seat. It’s a campaign.”

Downing Street has neither denied nor confirmed reports alleging an illicit Christmas party, but has insisted no Covid guidelines were breached.
