Burnham: Time to send a by-election message to the coalition

Andy Burnham campaigns in Oldham East and Saddleworth on behalf of Labour candidate Debbie Abrahams:

“What we’ve told MPs this week is that the number of people who’ve been here to help shows that Labour is coming back strong. And that’s the message of this by-election – we’re fighting hard, coming back strong with confidence.

“Tomorrow is a chance for the voters of Oldham East and Saddleworth to send a very direct message to this Tory-led government. It’s a referendum on their broken promises and we’ll be telling them exactly what we think on what they’ve done. They’ve promised more police, both the Tory candidate and the Liberal candidate at the general election. What are they doing? They’re cutting police numbers by 1,400. It’s absolutely disgraceful.

“They’ve broken their promise on VAT and people are feeling that as they go to fill up their car. And they’ve broken their promise on tuition fees.

“We believe this is a close race and that’s why we’re fighting with everything we’ve got in the final hours of this by-election.”
