Lloyd, Tony

Tony Lloyd was first elected to Parliament as the Labour MP for Stretford in 1983.  He left Parliament in 2012 to become the Greater Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner and interim Mayor of Manchester between 2015 and 2017.

He returned to Parliament as the MP for Rochdale in 2017, being re-elected in 2019 with a majority of  9,668.

The constituency of Rochdale is found in the north western corner of the Greater Manchester conurbation.   An ethnically diverse seat, a quarter of the local population are of Asian descent.   It is one of the most long standing Labour – Liberal Democrat marginals in the UK, and was previously represented in Parliament by the disgraced Liberal MP, and serial sex offender, Sir Cyril Smith.

It was in this constituency that Gordon Brown was caught on tape describing a local voter as a bigot after having a conversation with her while campaigning in the 2010 General Election.

Tony Lloyd served as Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland between 2018 and 2020, and as Shadow Minister of State for Housing in 2017.  In a varied political career he was previously the Minister of State at the Foreign Office under Tony Blair between 1997 and 1999, and Chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party between 2006 and 2012.

Before entering Parliament, Tony Lloyd studied at Nottingham University and Manchester Business School, gaining qualifications in Maths and Business. He was a lecturer in the Department of Business at Salford University. He was a Councillor on Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council from 1979-84 and was deputy leader of the Labour group.

In 2020, Tony Lloyd spent 25 days in Manchester Royal Infirmary with Covid-19, including 10 days in an induced coma on a ventilator.

Tony Lloyd is Vice Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Poverty, the Rule of Law, Technology and National Security, Argentina, Transport Safety, Chile, Central America, France, Latin America, Ukraine, the Bus and Coach Industry, Housing and Planning, and Human Rights. He is Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Belarus.

Lloyd supported Lisa Nandy in the 2020 Labour leadership election.

He is married with three children.
