Alastair Campbell in brawl with pop star

Downing Street's former director of communications has found himself in an unlikely brawl with a member of boyband The Wanted.

The altercation began during a charity football match at Burnley's Turf Moor ground, when Alastair Campbell squared up to Tom Parker over persistent foul play.

Pictures from the event appear to show Mr Campbell shove the young player, before their teammates join in and a minor scuffle ensues.

Mr Parker was later stretchered off the field with a suspected broken leg during a subsequent game, although it turned out to be a twisted knee.

Mr Campbell displayed his customary skill in message formation after the match, tweeting that it had been "tasty in parts" and admitting that there had been "a bit of handbags".

He later tweeted Mr Parker: "Thought ours was a good competitive match."

But fans of The Wanted, whose single 'All Time Low' hit number one in the charts last year, were unforgiving, with some telling Mr Campbell he had made "enemies for life" and that he should "sleep with one eye open".
