“A waste of time”: Students in halls during Covid-19

Students in halls were encouraged to come to university despite the coronavirus pandemic and now many are not allowed to leave their flat.

Fergal Crerar is a first year student in halls at the University of Glasgow. He’s not been able to join any societies or meet people in other flats.

Students in Scotland have been forced to adhere to especially strict rules.

Last week, students were asked not to socialise with anyone outside their household.

This meant trips to the pub or other hospitality venues were banned.

Many universites are doing “blended” teaching, with a mix of online and face-to-face classes.

Fergal said:

“It feels kind of like a waste of time.”

“I could have done all the learning at home.”

“A big part of university is meeting new people.”

“And that’s just not been possible for anyone at all.”
