McCabe, Stephen

Steve McCabe was first elected to Parliament in 1997, being reelected in 2019 as the Labour Party MP for Birmingham Selly Oak with a majority of 12,411.

The constituency of Birmingham Selly Oak is located to the south of Birmingham.  Although this was traditionally a marginal seat that used to held by the Conservative Party whenever they were in government, this area has bucked the national trend in recent years and has become far safer territory for Labour.  Containing many students from the nearby Birmingham University, the Cadbury’s chocolate factory is found within this constituency.

McCabe served as a government whip between 2007 and 2010, and an assistant government whip between 2006 and 2007.

He was one of just a handful of Labour MPs who previously supported a referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union, before the actual 2016 public vote was held.

Steve McCabe was born in Port Glasgow in 1995.  After studying Social Work in Scotland and Bradford in the 1970s and 1980s, McCabe worked with young offenders and in child protection. He later lectured in social work at North East Worcestershire College.

McCabe was elected to Birmingham City Council between 1990 and 1998.

In 2017 he was injured and suffered a badly swollen face after being hit by a brick thrown by someone on a motorbike.

Steve McCabe is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Heart Valve Disease; and Looked after Children and Care Leavers; Fit and Healthy Childhood; and Retail Crime. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Speech and Language Difficulties; Commercial Radio; and Israel.
