Biography:

Ruth Smeeth was elected MP for Stoke-on-Trent North on May 7th 2015 with 15429 votes, taking 39.9% of the vote.

Ruth was selected as an MP candidate for the first time in 2010, when she was running for a seat for the Burton constituency, but she lost against the Conservative Andrew Griffiths, finishing 6304 votes behind. In 2015 she was selected again – this time for Stoke-on-Trent North – winning an all-women shortlist. Once elected, she took the place of retiring Labour MP Joan Walley. Daughter of two trade union workers, Ruth has been an activist and a Labour Party campaigner since her childhood.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1979, Ruth graduated from the University of Birmingham in Politics and International Relations and now lives in Tunstall, Staffordshire, with her husband.
