Sarah Owen is‌ ‌the Labour‌ MP‌ ‌for Luton North‌‌,‌ ‌having‌ ‌first‌ ‌been‌ ‌elected‌ ‌to‌ ‌Parliament‌ ‌in‌ 2019 with‌ ‌a‌ ‌majority‌ ‌of‌ 9,247 ‌over‌ ‌the‌ Conservative‌ Party.‌ ‌
Luton North is now a safe Labour constituency having been held by the Conservatives for much of the 1980s and 1990s.  An ethnically diverse constituency, over a quarter of its electorate are of Asian descent. As well as being on the commuter line to London, the local economy is influened by the Vauxhall Car plant and Luton’s growing airport.
Sarah Owen served in the Labour whips office, as well as being a member of the Shadow Levelling Up, Housing, Communities and Local Government team.
However, she resigned from the Labour frontbench over leader Keir Starmer’s stance on Gaza, after voting in the House of Commons for a Scottish National Party amendment calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Born in 1983, Sarah Owen is the first female MP of Chinese descent.  She is Vice Chair of the HOPE not Hate Parliamentary Group, an anti-racism campaign organisation. She is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Hate Crime.
Educated at Sussex University, she previously worked as a NHS care worker and in the London Fire Brigade’s Emergency Planning Department.  Moving into politics she became a political officer for the GMB trade union and then served as a political advisor to the businessman and TV Apprentice supremo, Lord Sugar.
Formerly from East Sussex, she unsuccessfully contested the Hasting and Rye seat in the 2015 General election.
Owen supported Lisa Nandy for the Labour Party leadership in 2020. She is a former member of the Labour Party’s governing body, the National Executive Committee.
She is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Adult Social Care, Domestic Abuse, and Knife Crime.
