Nigel Mills was first elected as the Conservative MP for Amber Valley in 2010 being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 16,886.

The Amber Valley constituency stretches from the northern outskirts of Derby to the edges of the Peak District.   A rural seat, it also includes the former market and manufacturing towns of Ripley, Alfreton, Ambergate and Langley Mill.  Amber Valley is a one of the UK’s most long standing swing marginal seats which has been won by the governing party in every General Election since it was created in 1983. Some 65% of the electorate backed Leave in the 2016 referendum on Brexit.

Born in 1974, Mills was educated at Newcastle University.  Having qualified as a Chartered Accountant, he worked as a tax adviser, specialising in advising UK businesses on International Tax issues before being elected to Parliament.

Mills was previously a councillor on Amber Borough Council between 2004 and 2011.

In 2014, Mills was filmed playing Candy Crush during a Commons Committee meeting, for which he later apologised.

Mills is a member of the European Research Group of Conservative MPs and backed Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum.

He opposed the coalition government’s use of air strikes on Islamic State.  He has also opposed any further regulation of the press.

He supported Boris Johnson in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.  However, following the news that the prime minister and chancellor had received fines, Mills told BBC Radio Derby that: “In all conscience I don’t think a prime minister can survive or should survive breaking the rules he put in place”, adding, “We have to have higher standards than that of people at the top. He has been fined, I don’t think his position is tenable”.

Mills is a a season ticket holder at Notts County football club and a member of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club.

Nigel Mills is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Darts; Cleaning and Hygiene; the East Midlands; Pensions; and Co-Chair on Anti-corruption and responsible tax. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Working at Height; Uzbekistan; the Peak District; and Taxation.
