Maggie Throup was first elected as the Conservative MP for Erewash in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 10,606.
Located in the bottom right corner of Derbyshire, the seat contains the towns of Long Eaton and Ilkeston and is located between Derby and Nottingham. The constituency of Erewash is the ultimate swing marginal which has been won by whichever party has formed the government of the day ever since 1983.
In September 2021, Throup was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health and Social Care. She formerly served in the Government Whips office.
Born in 1957, Throup obtained an Honours degree in Biology from Manchester University. She worked as a medical laboratory scientist at Calderdale Health Authority for seven years.
She then moved into medical diagnostics sales and marketing with a pharmaceutical company, before establishing her own marketing company before being elected to Parliament.
A Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science, she supports the increased use of diagnostic testing so to limit the amount of antibiotics that are wrongly prescribed.
Throup voted Remain in the 2016 EU referendum.
She supported Matt Hancock in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election. She enjoys hill walking and gardening.
