James Davies was first elected as the Conservative MP for Vale of Clwyd in 2015 by 237 votes. He lost the seat in the 2017 election, but was re-elected in 2019 with a majority of 1,827.
The Vale of Clwyd is a long time marginal seat that covers the north Wales coastal towns of Prestatyn and Rhyl, and some of the surrounding rural areas to the south. Inland it includes the towns of Denbigh, Bodelwyddan, and Trefnant. The constituency has high levels of deprivation in some of the coastal districts, and is heavily dependent on the tourism sector. Having been held by Labour between 1997 and 2015, the sweat has yo-yoed between the two major parties in susbequent elections.
Dr James Davies was appointed as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Wales Office in October 2022.
He was previously a PPS at the Department of Health and Social Care but resigned in July 2022 in protest at Boris Johnson continuing to remain as prime minister.
Dr James Davies is a medical doctor, specialising in dementia. The Register of Members Interests showed him to be working part time as a GP in North Wales through much of 2020.
Born in 1980, he was educated at Cambridge University, and is married with two children. He states DIY as one of his interests.
Davies was a member of Prestatyn council between 2008 and 2015.
Davies is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia, and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Mersey Dee North Wales.
