Emmy Hardy is the Labour MP for Kingston upon Hull West and Hessle, having first been elected to Parliament in 2017. She was reelected in 2019 with a majority of 2,856 over the Conservative Party.
She currently serves as Shadow Minister for Environmental Quality and Resilience, having been appointed to the role in Keir Starmer’s September 2023 reshuffle.
The constituency of Hull West and Hessle covers much of the city centre of Hull alongside the city’s fishing port.  The least affluent of the three Hull seats, it contains a number of inner city districts as well as the suburb of Hessle to the west along the Humber. This has been a solid Labour voting area since the Second World War. This is a strong Leave voting area where a high 68% backed Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum. The former winner of the Apprentice TV series, Michelle Dewberry stood for the Brexit Party here in 2019 and won over 5,000 votes.
In the May 2022 local elections, the Liberal Democrats gained control of Hull council.
Emma Hardy served as the Shadow Minister for Further Education and Universities between 2020 and 2021. She had previously served as PPS to Sir Keir Starmer during his period as Shadow Brexit Secretary. Hardy backed Starmer in the 2020 Labour leadership election.
Born in 1979, Emma Hardy was educated at the University of Liverpool and the University of Leeds.
She worked as a teacher for over ten years at Willerby Carr Lane Primary school, before being elected to Parliament. She also worked as full time organiser for the National Union of Teachers, and has been Deputy General Secretary of the Socialist Education Association.
At Westminster, Hardy is the Chair for the All-Party Parliamentary Groups for Oracy, and Vascular and Venous Disease, and Vice Chair of the Group on Endometriosis.
Hardy lives in Hessle with her partner James, and their two children.
