Dorans, Allan

Allan Dorans is the Scottish National Party MP for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock, having first been elected to Parliament in the 2019 general election, gaining the seat from the Conservative Party with a majority of 2,329.

As its name suggests this constituency contains the towns of Ayr on the west Scottish coast, as well as the rural area around the smaller town of Carrick, and  the former mining town of Cumnock. It is a quite a large geographical seat covering the east and south of Ayrshire. The famous Turnberry golf course is found within this seat, as is Alloway, the birth place of the famous Scottish poet, Robert Burns.

Although this seat was held by Labour between 1997 and 2015, it has since become a tightly fought marginal between the SNP and the Conservatives.  The SNP won here in 2015, only to lose to the Conservatives in 2017, before winning the seat back in 2019.

Born in 1955, Allan Dorans left school at 16, joining the Metropolitan Police as a cadet.  He had a successful police career becoming a Detective Inspector at the early age of 28.  He later worked in Human Resources at Butlins in Ayr.

In March 2022, Allan Dorans, was admitted to St Thomas’s hospital following a fall at Westminster in which he fractured his upper leg.

Dorans was a member of South Ayrshire council between 2012 and 2017.

He is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Scottish Sport.
