Doogan, Dave

Dave Doogan is the Scottish National Party MP for Angus, having first been elected to Parliament in 2019, gaining the seat from the Conservatives with a majority of 3,795.

A rural constituency, Angus is found within the county of Forfarshire in the North East of Scotland. It covers the towns of Montrose, Arbroath, and Forfar.   Angus has long been an SNP-Conservative party marginal.  Although Arbroath, where the 1320 Declaration of Scottish Independence was signed, is found within this seat, the majority of the electorate in Angus nevertheless voted, ‘No’ in the 2014 election on Scottish Independence.

Born in 1983, Doogan was a former helicopter engineer, who previously enjoyed a successful career with the Ministry of Defence.  He is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Engineering.

Doogan left the civil service to study at Dundee University in 2007, graduating with a first-class Honours degree in politics in 2011.

Doogan then served as an SNP councillor in Perth and Kinross between 2012 and 2020.  He was formerly the SNP Deputy Leader of the Council.

During his time on the council, in 2017, Doogan made a speech in Gaelic which contained the words ‘redcoats’ and ‘quislings’.  This led to accusations of Doogan being hostile to the English.

Born to Irish parents, Doogan is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Ireland, and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on the Celtic Nations.
