Campbell, Sir Alan

Sir Alan Campbell  has been the Labour Party MP for Tynemouth since 1997, and was reelected with a majority of 4,857 in 2019.

The constituency of Tynemouth is found to the east of Newcastle on the Tyneside coast. It includes the seaside resort of Whitley Bay, as well as the communities of North Shields, Monkseaton, and Cullercoats.  Containing a mix of Newcastle commuters, alongside some former mining and shipbuilding communities, this area has swung heavily to Labour during the Twenty First Century.  Although often involved in a tight contest, the seat was held continuously by the Conservatives solidly between 1950 and 1997.

Campbell has been the Opposition Chief Whip at Westminster since 2021 and sits in the Shadow Cabinet.  He served as Labour’s Deputy Chief Whip between 2010 and 2021.

Campbell served as a government whip between 2005 and 2008, and then as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Home Office between 2008 and 2010.

Born in 1957, Alan Campbell was born and bred in Consett in Durham, and went to the Blackfyne Grammar School, before attending the University of Lancaster.

He began his career as a history teacher at Whitley Bay High School in 1981, and after eight years there, he became the Head of the Sixth Form at the Hirst High School on Lichfield Close in Ashington.

He is a keen angler and season ticket holder at Sunderland Football Club.  He is married with an adult son and daughter.
