Govt solar farm ban would sabotage cheap energy

Commenting on media reports that the UK government is considering proposals to ban solar farms from most of England’s farmland, Greenpeace UK policy director Dr Doug Parr said:

“The government is once again trying to sabotage one of the cheapest and quicker-to-deploy energy sources we have. Since it’s perfectly possible to use land underneath solar panels, we don’t face a stark dilemma between homegrown clean energy and food. If ministers are keen to put our land to better use, perhaps they should take a look at golf courses and biofuel crops, which take up 7 and 77 times more space than solar farms, respectively. With energy bills at an all-time high, the government should get rid of barriers to the cheapest energy sources we have, not put up new ones.”
