Greenpeace reaction to EV sales figures increase

Responding to new sales figures from New AutoMotive, which show that 25% of all car registrations in November were electric – the highest market share for EVs since December 2022 and a 51% sales increase on Nov 2023, Greenpeace UK’s policy director, Doug Parr, said:

“Electric car sales are booming. This bumper month for EV sales pours cold water on the attempts by some car makers to water down production targets, as well as the misinformation being spread that seeks to sow seeds of doubt among the public.

“Consumers are clearly smart enough to see through the nonsense when the benefits – both environmentally and financially – of owning an EV are so obvious.

“And far from crippling the car industry, the tens of millions that BMW stands to make from selling credits after investing heavily in EVs prove that electric car targets for manufacturers can actually be a cash cow. Accelerating the pace and scale of investment will enable the UK to keep a slice of the international pie in clean transport technology.

“Now, it’s the government’s turn to ignore the noise and publicly confirm it will stick to its guns on the 2030 phase-out date for new petrol and diesel cars and vans, and the zero-emission vehicle mandate for manufacturers.”
