Brown marks D-Day anniversary

Prime minister Gordon Brown and Prince Charles have joined several other world leaders and dignitaries in France today to mark the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy.

Along with the British dignitaries and others from several countries, French PM Francois Fillon attended proceedings at a memorial service at Bayeux Cathedral where many veterans were also be present.

Mr Brown laid a wreath inside the cathedral to remember those who died during the landings in 1944, which featured more than 100,000 allied troops.

An event was also held at the Normandy American cemetery later in the day, where Mr Brown and the Prince were joined by American president Barack Obama and French president Nicolas Sarkozy.
