Nine charged over Istanbul bombings
A security court in Turkey has charged nine men with ‘belonging to, aiding and abetting an illegal organisation’ in relation to last week’s bombings in Istanbul.
The attacks on the British Consulate and an HSBC bank branch killed at least 28 people and were seen as being directly aimed at Britain.
Groups thought to be connected to the terrorist organisation al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the bombings
While the men were charged three others held since last Thursday were freed after a late-night session of the court.
Istanbul governor Muammer Guler has said they have clues that identify the ‘culprits’ of the attacks, however he has refused to name the suspected bomber.
Turkey is currently undergoing democratic reforms with the hope of entering the European Union. There have been calls to speed up the process since the attacks took place.
