Where does Rishi Sunak live?

Rishi Sunak became leader of the Conservative party and the UK’s 57th prime minister in October 2022 — this gave him the keys to 10 Downing Street, which has been occupied by the UK prime minister for almost 300 years.

Mr Sunak also has access to the prime minister’s official countryside residence, Chequers, in Buckinghamshire.

But outside of the properties granted to him by virtue of his office, the prime minister is understood to have an extensive property portfolio.

The former chancellor is one of the wealthiest politicians to eever take office, earning a spot on the annual Sunday Times Rich List for both 2022 and 2023. With his wife Akshata Murty — the daughter of Narayana Murthy, Indian billionaire and co-founder of IT services giant Infosys — he is estimated to have a net worth of £529 million.

According to media reports, Mr Sunak and his wife are the owners of four properties in the UK and US. Two of these properties are in Kensington, London. The couple also have a home in Mr Sunak’s home constancy in North Yorkshire. Their fourth home is in California.

The Yorkshire home and Californian abode are said to be under Akshata’s name while Rishi officially owns the London properties.

Mr Sunak’s primary London home is a five-bedroom house in Kensington.

According to Land Registry records seen by The Times, Mr Sunak and his wife purchased this home for £4.5m in 2010. It has five bedrooms, four bathrooms and two receptions spread across four storeys — it even has access to a private garden.

The couple also have a flat on Old Brompton Road in south Kensington, which has been reported in the media as acting as a holiday home for visiting relatives. Mr Sunak is thought to have initially purchased the flat in 2001 while working as an investment analyst for Goldman Sachs.

The family also has a Grade II listed Georgian mansion. Set on a 12-acre plot of land near Northallerton, the mansion was thought to have cost around £1.5million. It boasts an ornamental lake and a recently built pool on the property.

The impressive property, which they bought in 2015, also has its own lake and boating house. As the MP for North Yorkshire since 2015, this would be Mr Sunak’s constituency home. A former vicarage, the house was built in 1826.

Renovations to add a 12-metrepool to the huge home, for which the PM was granted permission by the local council last August, were revealed as well as a large private pond and an idyllic wildlife area on the grounds. It was speculated that the swimming pool alone could cost more than £400,000.

Mr Sunak also applied to add a stone building to host a new home leisure facility including a gym and showers. He previously converted outbuildings to create guest rooms before applying to create the swimming pool.

The couple’s final property is a penthouse apartment in Santa Monica, California, which was purchased by Ms Murthy directly from the developer in 2014. The luxury property, which features a view of the Pacifica Ocean is thought to be an ode to the time the former Chancellor and his wife spent in America while studying at Stanford University. It is valued at £5.5million by US property website Redin
