Ruth Cadbury was first elected as the Labour Party MP for Brentford & Isleworth in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 10,514.
Brentford and Isleworth is an economic and ethnically diverse constituency which includes a large Hindu, Sikh, and also Buddhist community.  It contains affluent housing along the Thames in Chiswick and more deprived tower blocks in parts of Brentford.  Covering the community of Hounslow, the seat tracks the Piccadilly and District underground lines and includes a large number of London commuters, as well as bases for GlaxoSmithKline and the broadcaster BSkyB.
This has long been a swing marginal constituency, which was once represented by the Conservative Party’s first Asian MP of the modern era, Nirj Deva. In the last two elections it has bucked the national trend however and become safer territory for Labour.
Cadbury currently serves as a Shadow spokesperson on International Trade. Cadbury served as Shadow Minister for Housing between 2016 and 2017. She supported Owen Smith in his 2016 challenge to Jeremy Corbyn for the Labour leadership.
Cadbury was formerly a local councillor for 25 years, serving as deputy leader of London’s Hounslow Borough Council from 2010 to 2012. She opposes the expansion of Heathrow airport.
Born in 1959, Ruth Cadbury was educated at Salford University. She is a descendent of John Cadbury, famous for his role with the Birmingham chocolate factory. Cadbury is one of just a few Quakers in the House of Commons. She was formerly a Planning Advisor.
Cadbury backed Jess Phillips in the 2020 Labour leadership election.
Cadbury is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Loan Charge; PANS and PANDAS; Period Equality; Women in Transport; Cycling and Walking; Heathrow Expansion. She is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on State Pension Inequality for Women; Housing and Care for Older People.
