Why is Sunak ‘desperate to defend the non-dom tax loophole?’, asks Labour

In an opposition day debate put forward by Labour, MPs have considered non-domicile tax status.

Shadow financial secretary to the treasury James Murray said: “Labour believes that if a person makes Britain their home, they should pay their taxes here. That patriotic point should be accepted on all sides of the political divide. Yet ministers in this government under this prime minister seem desperate to defend the non-dom loophole. What is it about the current prime minister that makes him so reluctant to abolish non-dom tax status?”

In response, the financial secretary to the treasury Victoria Atkins replied: “To those who ask where the burden falls in paying for this support, they should look at the measures in the Autumn Statement, because the measures as a whole show that we have asked wealthier people to pay more”.
