UK latest country affected as floods wreak havoc around the world – Greenpeace reaction

24 September 2024, London – Reacting to news of widespread flooding across parts of England after a month’s rain fell in a day, Aakash Naik, Campaigner at Greenpeace UK, said: “The UK is the latest country to be hit by extreme weather that is wreaking global chaos, even forcing fossil fuel companies to evacuate oil rigs and halt production. But while Shell and BP weather the storms their industry has intensified, ordinary people from Auckland to Aldershot are left to pick through the wreckage.

“This is the world Big Oil is creating for us, where those who have done little to cause the climate crisis foot the bill while the companies responsible bank billions every year. A different, better future requires leaders to stand up to the industry and properly tax big polluters to pay for the damage they are causing worldwide. Labour has promised bold action on climate, now they need to put their money where their mouth is.”
