Labour energy & insulation package announcement

Labour has announced a new package of measures around the energy price cap and insulating houses, among other elements, to be unveiled by Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves at the Fabian Conference on Saturday.

Responding, Rebecca Newsom, Head of Politics at Greenpeace UK, said:

“Labour’s been vocal this week in laying out some of the bold policies needed to tackle the cost of living crisis, wean us off volatile fossil fuels and ramp up the green industries that will help cut our bills for good. Ahead of a general election, Labour’s package on measures to tackle climate breakdown and the cost of living crisis is starting to make the other major political parties look rather exposed.

“No more licences for North Sea oil and gas. A new ‘clean power alliance’ for countries to raise global ambition in delivering net zero. Properly taxing fossil fuel giants’ profits to give households more relief with their bills and major investment in a national programme for home insulation. These are some concretely progressive policies that chart a path through these crucial issues. But we still need to see more from Labour on providing immediate assistance to those already in fuel poverty. And more detail is needed to prove Labour is ready to deliver a green industrial strategy – through proactive engagement with businesses and trade unions.

“A generation of voters is coming of age in the twin crises of climate and cost of living: political parties better have some answers come the general election. Because right now, Labour’s fired the starting pistol and the Conservatives, SNP and Lib Dems are lagging behind.”
