‘Poorly targeted Universal Credit uplift needs replacing’ – CPS

The Centre for Policy Studies (CPS) is calling for the £20 Universal Credit uplift to be replaced.

The CPS wants to replace the uplift through a coronavirus hardship payment that would be phased out once the pandemic is over.

James Heywood, head of welfare and opportunity at the CPS, believes the government’s current problems stem from ‘shoving welfare into a corner’ before the pandemic began.
