Social security bill shows government is ‘on the side of the most needy’, says Stride

The social security bill had its second House of Commons reading today. If passed, it would provide for additional payments to recipients of means-tested benefits, tax credits and disability benefits.

Speaking in the debate, secretary of state for work and pensions Mel Stride said: “This government is on the side of the most needy. And I think we have demonstrated that firstly through the pandemic, through the furlough scheme, through the support that we provided for businesses. Secondly, as I’ve outlined, the £36 billion worth of direct payments last year to support those who are most in need”.

He added: “I’ve set out this legislation [to] bring forward yet further support in this coming year, which will help millions”.
