Rachel Reeves confronts ‘unforgivable’ inheritance with plan to plug ‘£22bn black hole’
In a House of Commons statement on Monday afternoon, the chancellor announced a series of measures to plug a “£22 billion black hole” in the public finances, left by the last government.
Rachel Reeves told the commons that the Conservative Party “covered up” the overspend and “ducked difficult decisions” knowing the money was not available.
As a result, the chancellor has scrapped several initiatives announced by the previous government, including the Advanced British Standard qualification, a qualification that was designed to replace A-levels and T-Levels.
Reeves said it had been scrapped due to its annual “unfunded” £200 million cost.
