Keegan defends government obesity plan u-turn
Gillian Keegan has defended the government’s much-maligned plans to water down restrictions on junk food in order to tackle obesity.
William Hague, a former leader of the Conservative party, said the government’s decision to delay action such as imposing TV advertising restrictions for cheap, unhealthy foods is “intellectually shallow, politically weak and morally reprehensible.”
In this morning’s health committee session, Jeremy Hunt pressed the minister for care and mental health ob her reaction to Lord Hague’s comments.
Keegan stated: “They decided to pause it just because the cost of living and food inflation and food costs is obviously the other thing that is peak in the news.
“None of that was anticipated when the original evidence gathering was done.”
