Jess Phillips: Exclude MPs accused of wrongdoing to keep parliament ‘safe’

Speaking during business questions this morning, Labour MP Jess Phillips said that the proposal to exclude parliamentarians accused of wrongdoing is about keeping “this building safe”.

It comes after the government decided to pull a debate on the proposal following the response of Conservative MPs, notably Sir Christopher Chope and Philip Davies, who tabled amendments.

Phillips asked leader of the House Penny Mordaunt: “So could you elaborate on why what happened last week has got anything to do with something that we’ve been fighting for five years?”

Mordaunt replied: “We need to debate these matters, taking seriously the concerns of our colleagues and just coming to this place and implying that members on this side of the House or the government benches don’t care about these issues is not helpful to do that”.
