‘I’m not going anywhere!’: Jack rules out standing down as an MP to accept peerage

The commons Scottish affairs select committee today heard evidence from the secretary of state Alister Jack.

Speaking in the hearing, Mr Jack explained how he approaches his role: “My job is to strengthen the Constitution and defend devolution. And I think the Scottish Government want to break up the United Kingdom, which would bring devolution to an end”.

The committee chair and SNP MP Pete Wishart responded: “I just wonder how helpful you think like ‘destroy the UK’ – that type of language is?”.

The secretary of state also confirmed that he would not be standing down as an MP before the end of this parliament to accept a peerage. He is widely tipped to be appearing on Boris Johnson’s resignation honours list, due for publication shortly.
