Final MP votes expected on assisted dying – campaigners to rally in support
Tomorrow, MPs are expected to finish the Report Stage of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill and cast their final votes at its Third Reading. If MPs vote in favour of the Bill, it will then head to the House of Lords for further scrutiny. Supporters of assisted dying will be gathering on Parliament Square from 9:00 until the end of proceedings, at roughly 14:30.
Carmen Sumadiwiria, Director of My Death, My Decision, said:
‘After months of scrutiny and careful debate, this Bill now includes stronger safeguards and clearer protections. MPs must now decide: continue forcing dying people to suffer, or finally offer them the choice and compassion they deserve. We urge every MP to act with courage and vote for the assisted dying Bill.’
Andrew Copson, Chief Executive of Humanists UK, said:‘MPs are now only a day away from this once-in-a-generation vote. We urge them to champion compassion and dignity, and vote in support of the Bill. No-one should be forced to endure needless suffering at life’s end. We can and must do better for those who are terminally ill as well as their loved ones. This is our chance.’
