General election 2010: Tories take Stroud

A maverick Labour MP in Gloucestershire, David Drew, has lost his seat.

The Conservative candidate Neil Carmichael took the constituency with a two per cent swing, winning 23,679 votes to Mr Drew’s 22,380.

Mr Drew was something of an independent Labour MP, a Eurosceptic who also tried to appeal to Green and Liberal Democrat voters.

Stroud was the constituency forgotten by David Cameron when he listed seats in Gloucestershire he wanted to win, while talking to the local radio station, saying later it was his first ‘gaffe’.
