General election 2010: Thurrock turns blue

The Conservatives have won the seat of Thurrock in Essex.

With parliament officially hung every gain by the Conservatives gives David Cameron one extra bargaining chip, both tactically and morally, in trying to form the next government.

Jackie Doyle-Price has won the seat by a majority of just 92, with 16,869 votes against the 16,777 polled by Carl Morris for Labour.

This represents a 6.6% swing from Labour to the Tories.

Turnout in the seat was low at less than 50%, especially compared to the national picture which saw the proportion of the electorate rise to 65% in seats which have declared so far.
