Damian Green was told by police he could face life imprisonment when he was arrested, he has claimed.

Speaking on Newsnight last night, the shadow immigration minister said he found the idea “absurd”.

The civil servant who passed on information to Mr Green, Christopher Galley, told the Daily Mail the same thing had happened to him.

The two men will no longer face any criminal charges after the crown prosecution service decided there was not enough evidence to proceed with a prosecution.

But Mr Galley will still face an internal disciplinary process.
