Boris Johnson to address MPs following Russian invasion of Ukraine

Prime minister Boris Johnson is expected to outline a raft of new sanctions on Russia and is expected to address the Commons at 5pm.

Johnson, who chaired an emergency Cobra meeting this morning, said the UK would react “decisively” to Russian president Vladimir Putin’s aggression.

Following the Russian advance in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region on Monday evening, the US, UK and EU announced restrictions on sale of Russian debt, the freezing of assets of a limited number of Russian oligarchs and their families, banks and politicians.

The government have previously said that no British troops will be deployed in Ukraine.

Energy markets have spiralled into chaos this morning as Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Russian president Vladimir Putin approved the “special military operation” in a televised speech earlier today.

Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba claims that a “full-scale invasion” has begun and accused Russia of shelling Ukrainian cities.
