New Labour MPs Alistair Strathern and Sarah Edwards sworn in after by-election victories in Mid Beds, Tamworth

Before the beginning of House business yesterday, the two new Labour MPs elected in last week’s brace of by-elections were sworn into the House.

Alistair Strathern, who replaces Nadine Dorries as the MP for Mid Bedfordshire, overturned a 24,000 Conservative majority to win last week. He was joined by shadow science, innovation and technology secretary Peter Kyle, who led the campaign in Med Beds, as he walked into the chamber

Sarah Edwards, who replaces Chris Pincher as the MP for Tamworth, overturned a 19,000 Conservative majority to win. She was joined by shadow Home Office minister Jess Phillips as she entered the chamber.
