MPs and speaker clash over granting of urgent question on US leak of top-secret Ukraine documents

The armed forces minister James Heappey was today called to the commons to answer an urgent question from Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood MP on the leak of top secret documents from the United States relating to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

However, there was some confusion over whether Mr Ellwood, as defence select committee chair, should have been granted the urgent question.

Fellow Conservative MP Julian Lewis said: “As the minister’s replies have indicated, it would be very unwise, particularly at this early stage, to discuss the implications of such a leak in public”.
