Kwasi Kwateng – UK to ‘phase out’ Russian oil

In a statement to the House of Commons, secretary for business, energy and industrial strategy Kwasi Kwarteng confirmed that the UK will “halt imports of Russian oil, which makes up 44% of Russian exports” as the UK bids to go further in sanctioning Russia for their invasion of Ukraine.

Kwarteng explains that the government will do this by “phasing out Russian oil during the course of the year to ensure a smooth transition”. He also told the House that the government are focussed on renewables and nuclear alternative power.

The secretary of state told the House that the British people “are willing to ensure hardships in solidarity with the heroic efforts that the people in Ukraine are making”.
