Government ‘squandered’ the legacy of London 2012, argues shadow sports minister

In a general debate on the value of sport, shadow minister for sport, tourism, heritage and music Jeff Smith accused the government of ‘squandering’ the legacy of the 2012 Olympics, held in London.

Mr Smith said: “We were promised a golden age in British sport after the 2012 London Olympics, but the government have squandered that legacy. Adult participation in sports actually fell in the first three years following the 2012 Games, and ministers abandoned plans to track the legacy of the 2012 Games in 2016. So can’t make any judgements about any legacy delivered from the £8.8 billion spent on the Games”.
