BBC Broadcast sold to Australians

An Australian business consortium has bought the BBC Broadcast unit for £166 million.

The BBC’s digital media subsidiary – offering transmission, media, and promotional services – had been at the centre of a dispute with unions over possible job losses.

But Creative Broadcast Services, the new owner, said there would be a one-year moratorium on compulsory redundancies.

“Creative Broadcast Services is committed to growing BBC Broadcast as a business and maintaining a long-term partnership with the BBC,” said BBC head Mark Thompson.

“I’m confident this will allow us to maintain the strong relationships which already exist between the BBC and BBC Broadcast.”

The Bectu trade union, representing most BBC Broadcast staff, has not yet commented on the deal.

The deal is subject to Government approval, but will probably be completed by August.
