Yorkshire decides to restrict Dales ownership
The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) has today supported plans to impose restrictions on the property market in the beautiful area of rural North Yorkshire.
In a move backed by governmental official William Carlow, the YDNPA is suggesting that home purchases in the Yorkshire Dales should only be approved if they are being made by local people or by key workers.
The proposals aim to tackle escalating house prices caused by city dwellers purchasing second homes in the Dales.
Details of how the scheme will work in practise have not yet been finalised. The proceedings are being closely followed by councils nationwide, many of which are experiencing similar housing price problems.
Authorities in Cornwall, the Lake District and the North York Moors in particular are all reportedly looking into setting up similar schemes.
But, the centre for economic and business research (cebr) has warned that the proposals could in fact, make the housing shortage worse.
They suggest that the plan could slow down the rate of construction in the area and push house prices further out of the reach of local people.
It suggests that the plan is “very risky” and is “likely to exacerbate the situation, as developers turn away from the very limited market opportunity and margins available in the restricted area. This restriction on supply is likely to further bid up the price of existing properties making them even less affordable than now.”
