Employment at highest ever level

New labour market figures showing employment at its highest ever level have been welcomed by the Government.

The figures, out today, show that the number of people in work was 28.43 million, an increase of 55,000 on the latest quarter and 232,000 on a year ago.

Unemployment fell by 67,000 during the quarter by the ILO definition, and 109,000 over the last twelve months.

But there was a small rise of 900 in the numbers of people claiming Jobseekers’s Allowance over the previous month.

Minister for Work, Jane Kennedy, said: “These figures show employment at its highest ever level. The number of people in work has increased by over 200 thousand in the last twelve months and by more than two million in the last seven years.”
