Five to face courts over Madrid bombs
Five people are due to face behind-closed-door hearings in connection with last week’s terror attacks in Madrid.
Three of the suspects are Moroccans and two are Indians – they were arrested following last Thursday’s bombings.
The men are facing a preliminary hearing, and the government claims their investigation has now reached a “decisive phase”.
The arrests were made in connection with a mobile phone attached to a bomb that failed to explode during the attacks on Madrid commuters that killed 201, wounding over 1,500.
Local police have reportedly identified six Moroccans as principal suspects – but just one of them is being held in custody.
The only member of the six in custody, Jamal Zougam, was reportedly identified by two survivors of the blasts. He was arrested over the weekend, along with the other suspects.
The government in Spain has said that they were working on identifying the “international connections” of the suspects.
Spain’s El Pais newspaper has said that police believe the attacks were perpetrated by people connected with the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group, allegedly “financed by al-Qaeda”.
Security services are looking for 20 Moroccans in connection with the attacks. An Algerian arrested in the Basque city of San Sebastian is also being held by authorities.
