John Kerry yesterday added Idaho, Utah and Hawaii to his list of local victories as he looks to secure the Democrat presidential nomination.

The Vietnam veteran cemented his position as frontrunner by comfortably winning the Idaho caucuses and the Utah and Hawaii primaries.

John Edwards, the 41-year-old senator from North Carolina, now looks like Kerry’s only real challenger.

As counting continues, Kerry has a strong lead in all three contests and is now in the driving seat going into the crucial ten-state round next week.

Yesterday President Bush made his first re-election speech, telling an audience of Republican senators that a new face in the White House would mean higher taxes and an uncertain foreign policy.

The president also criticised Kerry, suggesting that the Massachusetts senator was contradicting himself on key issues such as taxation and the war in Iraq.

Kerry responded by telling his supporters that his campaign had Bush “on the run”.
