Night Tube to partially reopen from end of November

Two London Night Tube lines – Central and Victoria – will reopen from November 27.

Nick Bowes, the chief executive at the Centre for London described the decision as “fantastic news for the capital,” he went on: “Not only will this give many Londoners the confidence they need to feel safe travelling at night, whether for work or leisure, but it will also boost London’s night time economy and encourage people to enjoy what’s on offer in our city after dark as Christmas approaches.

However he emphasised that the financial viability of the service was necessary, and said it was: “vital that the government and the Mayor can agree a long term, sustainable financial deal for our world-class transport authority as soon as possible.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan was criticised earlier this month for failing to reopen the services.

Transport Commissioner Andy Byford claimed in April that there was little demand for the service, however hospitality services have since reopened across the city.

Caroline Nokes MP, who chairs the women and equalities select committee said the decision is a “huge mistake” that “puts women at more risk”.

She said: “I would like to know what the Met Police will be doing to keep women, especially women, safe. As the nights have got darker and as we move towards the Christmas period, you can expect more people will be out celebrating and wanting to find a safe way home.”

Increased calls to reopen the service followed the issuing of a life order sentence to police officer Wayne Couzens last month, for the kidnap, rape and murder of Sarah Everard who vanished in March while walking home from a friend’s house in Clapham to her home in Brixton.

Sabina Nessa, 28, also went missing in South London on 17 September and was later found dead.
