Labour say government is ‘out of ideas’ following Queen’s speech

Shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds has slammed the government following the outlining of its forthcoming legislative agenda in today’s Queen’s Speech.

The MP for Stalybridge and Hyde told the BBC this afternoon that the plans: “didn’t rise to the occasion and the government is out of ideas, and if it were to deliver on its promises at the start of the speech it would require a complete reversal of outcomes of the previous decade”.

He said that while voters understood there were global factors at play in rising inflation, Labour were criticising the government’s response to the issues.

At the start of this morning’s speech Prince Charles said the government’s “priority is to grow and strengthen the economy and help ease the cost of living for families”, referring to plans to “level up opportunity in all parts of the country” and tackle Covid backlogs, currently sitting at 6.2 million.

He also said the government plans to “drive economic growth to improve living standards and fund sustainable investment in public services,” while maintaining “ a responsible approach to the public finances,” which will include “reducing debt while reforming and cutting taxes” and supporting the Bank of England to return inflation to its target.”
