Insulate Britain to pause protests ahead of COP26 summit

Insulate Britain claim they will pause their protest campaign until October 25th.

In an open letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, they said they would ‘suspend its campaign of civil resistance’ until October 25th, in anticipation of the COP 26 UN climate summit scheduled to begin on October 31st in Glasgow.

In an apparent attempt to win over the PM, who has formerly cited Winston Churchill as his personal hero, the letter quoted his 1936 statement that: “The era of procrastination, of half measures, of soothing baffling expedients, of delays is coming to its close. In its place we are entering a period of consequence,” possibly with the purpose of drawing parallels between the political crises of the 1930s to climate change.

Yesterday the eco-protest group blocked an M25 slip road in Thurrock, and they have repeatedly targeted major motorways and A-roads across London and nearby for over a month.

They are demanding that UK homes be retrofit with better insulation.

Last week the government took out a fresh injunction to target protesters who cause disruption on any of the highways on the Strategic Road Network linked to the M25 in the south east.

The new injunction bans activities that obstruct traffic and access to motorways and major A Roads in and around London. It also bans activities which cause damage to the road surface and infrastructure and prohibits activists from gluing themselves to the road or abandoning their vehicles.

Anyone who breaks this injunction faces imprisonment or an unlimited fine. Activists found in contempt of court may also be forced to repay the costs of their case.
