Number of HGV drivers falls by 39K

The Office of National Statistics has revealed that since the Brexit vote in 2016 there has been a general decline in the number of HGV drivers.

Most of that decline taking place over the previous two years, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic. There has been a large decline in those aged between 45 and 54 applying to be HGV drivers.

This comes amid a UK shortage of HGV drivers, bringing on an energy and petrol crisis in the country.

The ONS sources stated that around 268,000 people were employed as HGV drivers between July 2020 and June 2021, 39,000 fewer than the year ending June 2019 and 53,000 fewer than the peak for in 2017.
