Disgraced Conservative MP now living on Universal Credit

The former Conservative MP for Dover, Charlie Elphicke, has told a court how he is in a ‘very difficult and embarrassed position’ and is unable to pay a bill of £35,000 towards the costs of his prosecution.

Mr Elphicke was previously sentenced for two years imprisonment for sexually assaulting two women. He has since been released on licence and was summonsed to attend Uxbridge magistrate court on Friday for non-payment.

Elphicke who represented Dover in Kent between 2010 and 2019 told the court that he is now long term unemployed and is claiming Universal Credit.

His case has been adjourned to mid December whilst his benefit claims is assessed.

Mr Elphicke is now separated from his wife, Natalie Elphicke, who has filed for divorce.  Natalie Elphicke succeeded him as the Conservative MP for Dover in 2019.
