Number of channel migrant crossings hits daily record high

On Thursday around 1,000 migrants crossed the Channel to the UK, a new record high, the Home Office has confirmed.

The previous daily record was 853 arrivals, set on 3 November 2021.

A Home Office spokesperson has said in a statement that the figures are “unacceptable”, and that: “The British public have had enough of seeing people die in the Channel while ruthless criminal gangs profit from their misery and our New Plan for Immigration will fix the broken system which encourages migrants to make this lethal journey.”

At least two people have died in recent weeks attempting the crossing, and several more are feared dead.
